People post nearly everything on social media now-a-days. Whether you are checking in at your favorite coffee shop or showing off the masterpiece that you've cooked for dinner, social media is a part of everyday life. However, there are some circumstances where being active on social media can actually hurt you, and divorce is one of them. The following is a list from our Hauppage divorce lawyer of tips for safely using social media during your divorce:

  • Don't air your dirty laundry - It may feel good to vent on Facebook, but if you say something that can't be proven or is untrue, it could result in a libel action against you! Keep things polite and don't say anything about your divorce on the internet.
  • Adjust your privacy settings - There's a good chance that you and your ex have several friends in common, and unfortunately, they will probably take sides, and they may be looking out for signs of trouble. Adjust your privacy settings so those individuals won't see your posts or pictures.
  • Turn off location settings - When social media keeps track of your location, it will give clues to your timeline, how much money you are spending, if you are going out and partying all the time, etc. Turn off the location settings and disable the tag function for posts and pictures.
  • Don't update your relationship status - If you're separated and you've already moved one, you may feel like shouting it to the universe, but updating your relationship status now could lead to complications.

When in doubt, stay off of social media! If you really want to make sure that your social media accounts don't end up hurting your divorce case, delete your account until it is finalized!
